Route Descriptions
We have developed 3 routes which are known as the Woodland route (5 miles), the Bluebell Route (10 miles) and the River route (15 miles)
You can download the printable route PDFs below – if you’d like to use your own app you can also download a .GPX file to import.
Note that these routes may be updated before the Autumn event.
If you’ve walked with us before – note that the routes have been changed slightly to accommodate works on the new South Wokingham Distributor Road.
5 Mile Route
The original 5 mile route has been designed for those that are new to walking, or perhaps want to bring their children and/or dogs along for a nice day out in the surrounding countryside.
Starting in Elms Field, it quite quickly passes along footpaths, through into the countryside and woodland without crossing any major roads.
On the way you will pass the Henry Lucas Hospital, Wokingham’s only grade 1 listed building which was built in 1665 as an Alms House for the elderly of the area.
There is a free “Nature Trail” available at the start to keep the children occupied which involves looking for nature and wildlife along the route.
10 Mile Route
The 10 mile route was introduced as an interim distance challenge. Both the 10 and 15 miles routes start on the same paths as the Woodland route and then split off in the Gorrick Plantation, taking a bridleway that emerges on Nine Mile Ride.
15 Mile Route
If you follow the longer route (15 Mile) the path takes you by Wellington College where numerous famous past pupils including James Hunt, Will Young, Rory Bremner and George Orwell were educated.
This route will then dropgo towards Ambarrow Car Park and then follow the river Blackwater before climbing to the ridge to Finchampstead spare a moment at St James Church. This beautiful 12th century church uniquely has the burials of two holders of the Victoria Cross Britain’s highest award for bravery: Alfred Stowell Jones VC – Delhi – Indian Mutiny and Sir John Watson VC Won at Lucknow – Indian Mutiny.
After a few more miles it will rejoin the 10 mile route near Simons Wood and continue back towards the Gorrick Plantation.
